Ethiopian Airlines & ADD hub — airlift intelligence, route data, route pricing, airlines, and aviation signals. Weekly-refreshed snapshot from live schedule data and public sources. Updated 30 August 2026.
Schedule: no change. 150 departures and 19 arrivals from ADD — 69 unique routes, 11 airlines, 71 route–airline pairs. Zero new routes, zero dropped routes for the fifth consecutive week (4, 9, 16, 22, 29 Aug 2026).
Cargo expansion: Ethiopian Airlines launched a Chengdu–Addis Ababa freighter service on 28 August (Boeing 777 freighter, twice weekly) — the first direct all-cargo link between southwest China and Africa. It does not change the passenger schedule, but it widens ADD's role as a China–Africa cargo gateway.
Bishoftu mega-hub: The project drew fresh international attention this week (CNN feature) as earthworks continue on site. Contractor selection for the main works remains scheduled for early January 2027; the 2030 Phase-1 target (60M passengers/yr) is unchanged.
Network moves: ET launched Lyon (2 Jul, 3×/wk) and Mauritius (12 Jul, 3×/wk), resumed Kuwait (24 Jun), and added Hanoi–Bangkok frequencies — new destinations not yet reflected in the ADD schedule snapshot.
Ethiopian Airlines is Africa's largest airline by passengers, destinations, fleet size, and revenue. Operating from its Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) hub, it serves 150+ passenger destinations with a 145-aircraft fleet and a growth roadmap to ~271 aircraft. The live schedule snapshot (29 August 2026) tracks 69 unique routes, 150 weekly departures, and 11 airlines — Ethiopian alone accounts for 59 of 71 route–airline pairs (83%).
Ethiopia is constructing the $12.5 billion Bishoftu mega-hub about 45 km southeast of Addis Ababa as the country's future aviation gateway. Phase 1 is designed for 60 million passengers a year by 2030, with ultimate capacity of 110 million across four runways. The airline plans to grow from 133 to 207 international destinations, competing with Middle Eastern mega-hubs for Asia–Africa–Europe transit.

$12.5 billion project · ~45 km southeast of Addis Ababa · Africa's largest airport construction program, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.
Capacity: Phase 1 ≈ 60M passengers/yr by 2030 (vs Bole's ~25M today); ultimate ≈ 110M across four parallel runways with parking for 270 aircraft. Lower altitude than Bole (1,910m vs 2,334m) improves takeoff performance.
Financing: ET funds ~30%; ~$9B external syndication led by the African Development Bank (mandated lead arranger, $500M pledged); interest from US DFC, US EXIM, JPMorgan, Bank of China, and European/Middle Eastern lenders. Ethiopian Investment Holdings is setting up a special-purpose company to oversee delivery.
Status: Earthworks underway with 8,000+ workers on site (PM Abiy inspection, June 2026); construction began January 2026 and the project was featured in a CNN segment this week. Contractor selection for EPC-F bids moved from August 2026 to early January 2027; implementation timeline unchanged. Bole is also being upgraded (apron rehabilitation, Cat III low-visibility ops).
